Ann Arbor, Minnesota four-piece Taproot began its career in 1998. Huge fans of Limp Bizkit, the band sent its demo tape to front man Fred Durst, who was impressed and promised to get them a deal with Interscope Records. These negotiations were halted, however, when System of a Down heard the the band's nu-metal rap and secured the group a deal with Atlantic. Not one to give up grudges, Durst has since left many cursing messages on Taproot's answering machine, kicked System of a Down off his Family Values Tour and has bad-mouthed both bands in numerous songs. All of this negative publicity provided by Durst, however, only bolstered the band's reputation and Taproot has gone on to release several top selling records and still sells out venues across the US.
