Fates Warning is a progressive metal band from Hartford, Connecticut that rose to fame during the 1980s as a pioneer of the American progressive metal movement. After forming in 1983 and dropping its debut album studio album Night on Bröcken, the band began to hone a crossover sound between progressive hard rock and heavy metal, ultimately creating its own signature sound that was was first capture on the 1986 breakthrough album, Awaken the Guardian. Though consistent line-up changes led to a brief two and half-year hiatus, Fates Warning reemerged in 1994 with the album Inside Out, and a more melodic sound that didn't translate well with its audience. The band has continued to push forward, experimenting in darker, broodier sounds before again returning to its progressive roots with its eleventh LP, Darkness in a Different Light, in 2013.
