Formed by the Tony Award winning musician Stew & The Negro Problem began as a solo project in the early 90s, with its name meant as a sarcastic stab at the music industry's inability to comprehend a black artist making something other than "black music." Though Stew took a break from the moniker for the remainder of the 90s, releasing albums under his given name, Mark Stewart, instead, The Negro Problem was revived in 2002 with the addition of Heidi Rodewald. Since then the duo has created mulitple quirky psych rock albums, scored a few films and found its biggest success by writing a song for an episode of the wacky children's television show "Spongebob Squarepants."
