Born and raised in Kansas, Melora Creager moved to New York at the age of 18 to study photography. She ended up teaching herself how to play cello and began touring with Nirvana as part of its backing band. While on tour Creager realize she wanted to make music professionally, though she wanted none of the fame that came with being a musician. She formed the solo-project Rasputina and has stuck to her vow of remaining underground. In the early 2000s, Rasputina took on two more members, cellist Daniel DeJesus, who grew up listening to Rasputina and knew the entire catalog of songs by heart, as well as teenage punk rock drummer Melissa Bell. The new lineup only bolstered the organic, quirky cello rock Creager produced and the trio has been touring together ever since.
