Not many bands can boast that they formed while serving time in a correctional facility and went on its first tour in a relatively small area to avoid violating parole laws; but Pontiac, Michigan duo Binary Star can and did. Officially releasing an album once the two MCs got out of prison in 1998, Binary Star began receiving attention on the alternative hip-hop underground for its positive message raps and quirky samples. While the group was short lived, with both rappers claiming creative differences and breaking up in 2000, they released several solo albums, aided by the success of their first hip-hop group, and in 2010 decided to reunite to release another album.
