World music supergroup Afro Celt Sound System was one of the first bands to popularize fusion music. Formed by UK-based Grammy winning producer and guitarist Simon Emmerson, the group fuses traditional African and Irish music with contemporary electronic-rhythms, including trip-hop and techno. Coming together in 1995 in Peter Gabriel's Real World Records studio, with many band members not speaking the same language, Afro Celt Sound System quickly recognized its potential. Signing to Gabriel's label, with a five record contract, the band produced multiple award winning albums and became known for its live performances. Though the group took a hiatus in 2006, it has since returned to the world's stages with its unique form of musical fusion.
