In 1891, 1 August was declared Switzerland's National Day to commemorate the alliance of the central Swiss cantons Schwyz, Unterwald and Uri. Under constant threat from the powerful Habsburg rulers in Austria, the leaders of the three founding cantons signed a federal pact, pledging to defend each other. Little by little, the Switzerland we know today began to take shape. Since 1991 Fête nationale du 1er août has been celebrated with a public holiday. Windows are decorated with the national red and white flags, children paint lanterns for the evening procession and bonfires glow from mountain to valley while fireworks light up the towns. Entertainment, concerts and festivities carry on well into the night.
