Starkbierzeit (Strong Beer Time) is like the Oktoberfest without tourists. Known by locals as the 'fifth season,' this centuries-old festival harks back to the Paulaner monks who used to brew an extra-strong beer to help sustain themselves throughout the fasting period of Lent. Every year near St. Joseph's Day the first barrel of Starkbier is tapped amidst great celebrations. Local beer halls like Paulaner and Löwenbräu lay on special dances, parties, and other events during the ensuing three-week period. While numerous breweries in the city participate in the revelries, the most popular is Paulaner Nockherberg - the place where the Paulaner monks first brewed Starkbier. Anyone intending to visit Munich during the strong beer season is advised to start training now.
