Featuring
New York City native Stephanie Mills is a contemporary R&B and soul singer who got her start performing at Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater, which she would go on to win a record six times. These victories led Mills to her first Broadway role as the orphaned child of a runaway slave in the musical Maggie Flynn. She launched her recording career in 1973, when she signed with Paramount records and released her debut single "I Knew It was Love." She went on to sign with the legendary Motown Records, but she left the label by 1976 when her material failed to generate attention. Mills returned to the Broadway to portray Dorothy in The Wiz, and was immediately hailed for her performance of the "Home," a song that would go on to be one of her signature tracks. She signed with 20th Century Fox Records in 1979 and finally found her breakthrough with the disco record What Cha' Gonna Do with My Lovin', later the same year. Over the next decade, she would release hit singles such as "Never Knew Love Like This," before stepping away from music in the mid-1990s. Mills returned to recording with her 2004 comeback album Born for This.
