The Salzburg Festival is known throughout the world for its high caliber operas, plays and concerts. Each festival is accompanied by heated discussions on a variety of cultural issues, though there is no doubting the sheer brilliance of most of the productions. First held in 1920, it features performances by some of the biggest names in classical music, opera and theater, and draws tens of thousands of culture-vultures to Salzburg every summer. Regular venues include the Großes Festspielhaus, Kleines Festspielhaus, Landestheater and Mozarteum. The hours of operation vary with the events. The Salzburg Festival takes place every summer in July and August.
