ENTERTAINMENT VENUES, TOURIST ATTRACTIONS & SIGHTSEEING
Just like every other city, Kiel needed a drainage system. In order to put and end to carrying buckets to and fro, the so-called Pumpe (pump) was built near the Franciscan monastery in 1929. It pumped the sewage towards the outskirts of the city. Since 1979 the pump has been out of service, as it was closed in favour of a more up-to-date system. The building was completely refurbished and became a very popular cultural center and event venue, which offers a varied programme of interesting events today. In the refurbishing process, people were careful to preserve the old brick facade and the shallow roof, and the project was awarded the national architects' price in 1979.
