A former residence of Passau's Scharfrichter, Scharfrichterhaus is one of the major historical attractions of the city. First constructed in 1200, the present-day edifice dates back to the year 1977 and was commissioned by Edgar Liegl and Walter Landshuter. Famous as a lively entertainment venue, Scharfrichterhaus hosts some well-curated political cabaret and other satire acts to an enthusiastic audience. Additionally, a number of local as well as international jazz singers perform at this executioner's abode. Its cafe is designed to replicate an early 20th-century Viennese bistro, while the restaurant offers a fine selection of local fare and wines. It also hosts Passauer Cabaret Days, a cultural extravaganza celebrating the best of regional cabaret, music, theater and art.
