When producer Jimmy Tamborello and vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Ben Gibbard started a musical project together, they lived quite the distance from one another. They wanted to collaborate but the physical geography between the two was so substantial that it was deemed nearly impossible, until the two decided to work on tracks by themselves and send the products to each other via the United States Postal Service. When it came time to name the band the two looked to the organization that helped them make music: The Postal Service. The duo's 2003 debut LP Creations sold extremely well and helped establish the group as an intelligent electronic pop act.
