Before the term "freak folk" was even coined, Devendra Banhart was turning folksy inspired tunes into psychedelic gems. His gentle, 60s flower child persona is clearly evident in his far reaching music that ranges from tranquil to chaotic. After dropping out of the San Francisco Art Institute in the late 1990s, Banhart decided to pursue music full time and managed to busk on the streets of Los Angeles, San Francisco and various European cities before landing a recording contract and releasing his debut LP, The Charles C. Leary, in 2002.
