Taking cues from bands like Nirvana and My Morning Jacket, Thomas Hardy Morris and Walker Howle decided to form an alt rock grunge band in high school. While the group altered its lineup and band name throughout college, in 2006 it finally solidified itself as a five-piece called Dead Confederate, sticking to its same roots and creating something akin to post-grunge. After the release of its debut album, Dead Confederate caught the attention of Dinosaur Jr., particularly of front-man J Mascis, who asked the group to open for Dinosaur Jr. on tour. With this support, the Atlanta, Georgia-based group was able to expand its fan base throughout the US and Europe.
