Born to Russian-Jewish and Dutch-Javanese parents, and living in the Netherlands, Israel and France during her adolescence undoubtedly effected the way Keren Ann perceives life and the way she writes her music. The multi-cultural upbringing helped establish a sense of unbiased appreciation of different nationalities, cultures and styles of music that's usually only achievable through hard earned life experiences. A musician from a fairly young age, Ann began playing a number of low profile shows in the late-1990s, at small venues, and soon her characteristic style of dainty, world music-influenced alternative rock was noticed by the international label EMI. She released her debut album in 2001 and since then has managed to amass a respectable following with her soft voice and sparse guitar playing.
