Melanie Safka, professionally known as Melanie, is a singer/songwriter from New York who first rose to prominence in the late-1960s East Coast folk scene. Born to a musical family, with a jazz singer mother, Melanie was surrounded by music at a young age and made her first public singing appearance at the age of four. Studying acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, she soon began singing in the folk clubs of Greenwich Village, where she signed her first recording contract. Though she never grew into a major commercial musical force, Melanie has nevertheless maintained a successful career as a musician who creates true-to-heart songs with a defined unpretentious affability.
