Born Mike Silverman, That 1 Guy is a singer/songwriter and one-man band who is known for using homemade instruments. A classically trained double bass player, Silverman began his career in music as a progressive jazz player in the 1990s. As he developed a reputation as a one-man rhythm section, he began devising his own instrument that would give him the range to create his own sound. The result was the Magic Pipe, an over seven foot tall structure of plumbing pipes, bass strings and electronics, which allowed him to go solo and adopt the moniker That 1 Guy. He released his debut album in 2009, titled Let's Hear That 1 Guy, and steadily broadened his repertoire of strange instruments.
