Atlanta-based outfit The Coathangers formed one night as a joke, playing an impromptu set at a house party and calling themselves The Coathangers as an intentionally vulgar reference to early abortions. After the performance, the band was asked to open for The Hiss and suddenly became a serious endeavor. However, as demonstrated by song names like "Shut the Fuck Up," "Haterade" and "Nestle in my Boobies," the four-piece group held onto much of its initial absurdity. The band's vulgarity has come off as charming to many, and coupled with the a catchy lo-fi riot grrrl sound, The Coathangers has found an audience among the indie rock scene.
