Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes, the two members of the Australian electronic music duo The Presets, first met in 1995 while they were both studying at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. After discovering a mutual appreciation of 1980s pop music, the two would go on to help form the Sydney-based electronic group Prop in the late 1990s. But after the band failed to progress commercially or critically, both Hamilton and Moyes left and ended up starting what would become The Presets. Recording a demo, the duo was able to draw the attention of the prestigious Australian-based Modular Recordings and sign with the label. The Presets released its debut EP, Blow Up, in 2003, and the offering managed to encapsulate the group's fusion of dance and techno and with the unbridled energy of rock n' roll. The duo has since grown into a stalwart mainstay of the Australian music scene and is largely responsible for the country's infatuation with electronic dance music during the mid to late 2000s.
