Formed in the mid 1980s, A Tribe Called Quest was instrumental in changing much of the general public's opinion about hip hop. Instead of rapping about gang warfare and illegal drug use, A Tribe Called Quest talked about relevant issues that pertained to to the advancement of society. The intelligent lyrics in many of the group's songs demonstrated that rap could be used to enlighten people and educate them about problems that exist within communities. But the group's lyrical adeptness doesn't mean that the four-piece doesn't have a good sense of humor. Quite the contrary: A Tribe Called Quest fill its songs with comedic anecdotes and by telling satirical stories the group is able to coyly bring to light important issues that are like a thorn in the heal of society's normalcy.
