Amel Larrieux is an R&B and neo soul singer from the Greenwich Village area of New York City. As a co-founder of R&B duo, Groove Theory, in the mid-1990s, she scored a hit single with "Tell Me," which hit number five on the Billboard Top 100 and propelled her group's album to gold status. In 1999, Larrieux left the duo and set off to pursue a solo career. Her brand of smooth R&B and soul singing is known to incorporate jazzy elements, as well as less obvious influences of folk and rock. Larrieux has been hesitant to work within the major label system, creating her own label and self-releasing her albums instead.
