The picturesque village of Filzmoos, located roughly an hour's drive southeast of Salzburg, is in many respects the world capital of hot air ballooning. The event kicks off with the stunning Night of the Balloons, when dozens of multicolored balloons soar over the illuminated town. The entire week is filled with races and other balloon-themed events for the aficionado; the best way to appreciate the spectacle, however, is on skis, from the pistes of the Salzburger Sportwelt resort. Watching from the charming village streets, of course, is free.
