Petruskirche

St. Peter's is considered Kiel's most important religious building. In 1906-09 the church was built in the neighbourhood of Wik, where the navy always played an important role. The edifice's main attraction is the plank construction in the open roof-truss. Taking a closer look you will discover that it resembles an upside-down ship's hull. The church was meant to be given a suitable architecture to define it as a naval church. Divine service doesn't take place here any more, though. Due to its outstanding acoustics, the church has become a mere concert hall since 1984. Since 1986 it has become a firm location for the Schleswig-Holstein festival concerts.
