Selda Bağcan, known professionally as simply Selda, is a singer/songwriter and guitarist who makes psychedelic Turkish folk. She emerged as an activist and protest singer with a traditional Turkish folk style during the early 1970s, so she stunned audiences with her experimental releases during the middle of the decade. Though her music retains folk at its core, she made a name for herself with the psychedelic and electronic textures or albums such as Türkülerimiz 1 through Türkülerimiz 6, which were eventually reissued in the 1990s and 2000s. She was targeted by the Turkish military rulers for her politically charged songs, and she served time in prison on three different occasions. Her fearless songwriter paired with her forward-thinking sonic aesthetic made her a cult figure among the international rock and roll community.
