Largely the project of singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Anthony Gonzalez, M83 is a group that blends a myriad of modern styles including dream pop, ambient and synthwave together to form a cohesive and extremely listenable whole. Founded in Antibes, France, in 2001, M83 has matured quite considerably since it released its eponymous debut album that same year. Though the group's early sound was full of noise-y, drone-like sonic soundscapes, as M83 has evolved it has started to include more pop tendencies, like overarching choruses and memorable instrumental riffs. While many look at the group's 2008 album, Saturdays=Youth, as its breakout LP, Gonzalez and Co. were still only an indie sensation before releasing its sprawling 2011 crossover album, Hurry Up, We're Dreaming, with the crossover hit "Midnight City."
