Afrika Bambaataa was raised by a social activist mother and uncle in the New York Bronx housing project. Being aware of various plights that affected ethnic cultures, undoubtedly affected Bambaataa's outlook on life and government structures. Because there was a scant amount of policing going on in his community, Bambaataa felt the need to get involved and he formed a street gang to help control his turf. Soon he was one of the leading members of his gang but after a trip to Africa - where he saw first-hand the importance of responsible community organizing - Bambaataa changed his outlook and started to shun the militaristic gang life. Inspired by pioneering hip-hop DJs, he started hosting music parties and soon he even began making music. His unique approach to sonic composition helped rise him to a respected level in the music community and he is now looked upon as one of the more important figures of the rap movement that emerged in the 80s.
