Fission began as a personal project of the band's founder Benny Hägglund in an attempt to synthesize melody with the aggression of metal into a musical product that retains musicality without sacrificing the heavy, often cacophonic, drive of death metal. After embarking on his project solo, Benny recruited other instrumentalists, formed the band in 2002 and released its first full-length album, Crater, in 2004.
