Founding members Grutle Kjellson and Ivar Bjornson formed Enslaved in Norway in 1991 while they were still teenagers, after deciding they were bored with the traditional black metal movement of the time. The duo recruited three more bandmates and while the band stuck with the common theme of singing about Norse mythology, it began experimenting with song structure unusual to the metal genre, often producing songs that were up to 20 minutes long. As the band's sound progressed to include darker edges and Pink Floyd inspired riffs, Enslaved established itself as a highly influential band on the metal scene.
