Like most of its Dischord Records labelmates in the early 1990s, The Nation of Ulysses combined abrasive, tension-filled punk, rebellious rock and roll, and sociopolitical rhetoric to great effect. The group formed in 1998 in Washington D.C., which at the time had a burgeoning underground punk scene that was about to explode. Nation of Ulysses's live shows became much-talked about spectacles, as the five-piece was known to thrash around onstage with reckless abandon, encapsulating the youthful angst and energy found in its songs. Though it disbanded in 1992, the group's first two albums, 13-Point Program to Destroy American (1991) and Plays Pretty For Baby (1992) have become well-regarded classics of the D.C. punk movement
