Originally from Phoenix, AZ but formed in the San Francisco music scene of the early 1970s, The Tubes is a new wave band that has skirted the line between cult pranksters and legitimate rock stars since its inception. Led by the flamboyant Fee Waybill, the band often adopted a number of aliases onstage, complete with pun-based monikers and costumes. With minor radio hits such as the hard rock tune "White Punks on Dope" from its eponymous 1975 debut album, The Tubes proved it could write successful songs despite (or perhaps because of) the tongue-in-cheek nature of its overall style. The band continued to release music into the 2000s, such as 2009's Mondo Birthmark.
