The Cardiff, Wales band Young Marble Giants never made music because the members were interested in lasting success or mainstream cultural appreciation. Formed in 1978, the group was influenced by early electronic pioneers like Brian Eno, Kraftwerk, The Velvet Underground and Can, amongst others, resulting in the band's music taking on a distinct avant-garde rock quality. With many of the group's songs structured around sparse instrumentation with metallic- sounding bass and guitar, and the occasional synth overtone, Young Marble Giants managed to create a strong impression on listeners who were fans of daring, experimental music. The band would only release one album, 1980's Colossal Youth, and go on tour throughout the United States and Europe, but by 1980, the members of the group decided to dissolve the band and focus on a number solo pursuits; however, Young Marble Giants has reformed on a occasion to play special rare live performances.
