East Berlin in the 1970s was an interesting spot for music. The oppressive Cold War mentality seeped into countless bands sonic vibrations and severely influenced music--predominantly in a negative way. Because groups feared some sort of retaliation from the communist government, they oftentimes were afraid to express their true thoughts and emotions. When the rock band City formed in 1972, some people were taken aback at the impressive forthrightness of the group and all the musicians ability to ignore politics and concentrate on music. The group represented a new crop of musicians--those unafraid to peruse their musical passions--and soon the band would become a champion of the East Berlin music scene. When the wall came a-tumblin' down in 1989, the band was further exposed to interested music fans, and ever since, City has been one of the biggest rock bands in Germany.
