Originally the brainchild of Kip Uhlhorn of the 1990s hardcore band Red Scare, and Simon Wojan of the lo-fi garage outfit King Khan the Shrines, Cloudland Canyon formed as a strange amalgamation of ideas from two diverging musical backgrounds. While the project wasn’t fully developed until years later, Cloudland Canyon released a debut album in 2007 and has become a rotating cast of players that centers around Uhlhorn ever since. The result of the diverse background of the musicians that play with Cloudland Canyon is akin to psychedelia fed through a laptop--a spaced out futuristic take on the drug-addled genre of the 1970s. While this description may make the band somewhat contrived, Cloudland Canyon’s music is actually highly-innovative and nuanced, and begs for repeated listens.
