A rather controversial band due to its open condonation and even encouragement of suicide and self-harm, Shining was formed in 1996 in Halmstad, Sweden. Though many assume the band chose its name based on the Stephen King novel, the group claims to have chosen its name to represent "the path to enlightenment," which it attempts to portray through its suicidal black metal with tinges of progressive hardcore. Known for its highly violent live shows that include band members starting physical fights with the audience and throwing razor blades into the crowd, Shining is not for everyone.
